BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) began in 1891 with the formalization of customs collection under the British colonial administration, initially as part of the Niger Coast Protectorate. It evolved into the Department of Customs and Excise in 1922, with a paramilitary arm, the Customs Preventive Service, established later to combat smuggling. The NCS transitioned from a colonial entity to an independent Nigerian service, later formalized by the Customs and Excise Management Act of 1958, and today is responsible for revenue collection, trade facilitation, and border security.
