The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has roots in the British colonial era, beginning with the establishment of formal governance and a prison system in 1861, culminating in the Broad Street Prison in 1872. It was unified into a single system in 1968 and transitioned from the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) to its current name, the NCoS, in 2019 with the signing of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act. This 2019 law expanded the service's scope to include non-custodial services, such as parole, probation, and community service, aligning with international best practices for inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.
