Brief History of the Nigerian Customs Service

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) was established in 1891 as part of the British colonial administration in the Niger Coast Protectorate, initially responsible for revenue collection and border enforcement. It evolved through various names, becoming the Department of Customs and Excise in 1922 and later incorporating a preventive service for anti-smuggling activities. After Nigeria's independence in 1960, the service continued to expand its roles, with the first Nigerian Chief Executive appointed in 1964. Today, the NCS is a key paramilitary organization focused on trade facilitation, revenue collection, and national security at Nigeria's borders.
